Every year since I could remember, my mom’s town celebrated the Binalbal Festival every New Year’s Day. It was my first time to witness this parade since I always spent New Year at home. My cousins said to me that the past festivals were bigger and more extravagant that this year. They blamed it on lack of funding on the prize money. For someone who experienced it for the first, everything looked fine.

It was more like Halloween on New Year’s Day. Binalbal came from the word balbal which literally meant ghost.

My cousins and I chilled at my aunt’s terrace after the parade.
